Going to New Zealand! Today!

These next several posts will chart our impending journey to New Zealand, which begins on a CapMetro bus this morning at 9:30am and ends with our arrival to Auckland Int. Airport at 12:50pm on 12/31 (for us, there is no December 30th...) Along the way, we have two excellent layovers (Los Angeles & Nadi, Fiji) so expect to hear more about these places as well.

Below is a thingum I made that roughly maps out (and even animates!) our itinerary. Though illustrative, it may not be completely accurate, so don't rely upon it for good information.

  1. Hopped off a plane at LAX (which looked dingy and sprawling from the plane's window) at just after 1:30 PST; we made the mistake of leaving Terminal 4, hoping that the Tom Bradley International Terminal would have restaurants and restareas galore... but this was a mistake. We weren't able to go through security (the counter service hadn't opened, and wouldn't for some time). We also were going to try and catch a quick bus into town, but that just seemed too stressful... the airport isn't really close to anything. Instead, we waited for $5 fries at a place teeming with foreigners in the TBIT that had $12 chicken tenders, $15 salads, and $10 nutella crepes... while we were eating, though, a nice older couple told us that we reminded them of their younger selves, that we were "so cute", and that they had been married 37 years. Then they gave us a nice box of German "Merci" chocolates! Then we went outside a bit and watched the SmarteCarte-haulers slither past. Onward to Fiji!

    1. So, to set the record straight, my opinion of TBIT improved dramatically upon passing through security: their food court area is almost luxurious, and the seating is comfy and plentiful. Would that they had let us back here hours ago, and we'd've eaten our weight in veggie banh mi's from Ink Sack!
